Many women keep a favourite outfit for the day they lose weight, feel more confident or have somewhere special to go. Meanwhile, everyday dressing becomes something to get through, with little thought given to comfort or enjoyment.
You deserve clothes that work for you now. Bodies change through different seasons of life. Your routine, preferences and priorities may change too. It is perfectly reasonable for your wardrobe to evolve alongside them. Begin with fit. Notice whether a garment allows you to sit, walk and move comfortably. Check how it sits across your shoulders, bust, waist and hips. A different size or a small alteration can sometimes make a greater difference than buying something entirely new. Try to treat the size label as practical information. Sizing varies between brands and garments, so the number alone tells you very little about how an outfit will look or feel. Then think about what you enjoy wearing. Perhaps you love your shoulders, prefer a softly shaped waist or feel wonderful in a flowing dress. Use those preferences to guide your choices. Pay attention to your self-talk as well.
You can assess a garment kindly and objectively: “This cut does not feel comfortable,” or “I would prefer a different length.” You do not need to criticise your body to decide that something is unsuitable. Personal style gives you room to express who you are at this stage of your life.
